BACKGROUND

Jean Fraser is a photographic artist with a background in community and independent photography. She has exhibited widely in individual and group shows and much of her exhibitions and commissioned work has been concerned with health and environment.

These photographs are taken from “Past Tense – Future Condition”, a slide-tape work made in a disused NHS hospital.

After several years in the women's aid movement, Jean starting working as freelance photographer. She re-trained in the 90's and worked in adult mental health as an NHS state registered art therapist. However, having been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema) in 2000, she had to resign her art therapy post at the end of 2005 due to ill health.

Finding cycling easier than walking, Jean has developed the Drawing Breath project to enable her to continue her photographic practice while living with a chronic condition which requires regular attention to maintaining fitness. Her diagnosis has also provided her with an opportunity to explore connections between art, technology and the body.
